Slash? Yaoi? Why? o.o

Perhaps this is a touchy subject, but it's one that I feel I must bring up. Let me clear this up first. I have nothing against homosexuals. I even on occasion enjoy a few couples of this nature (Alin and Val from Melanie Rawn's Exiles and Raphael and Mikael from Tenshi ni Narumon are two good examples).

I'm a fan. Of a lot of different things. Anyone who has surfed the web for 'fanfiction' has to have noticed this trend that is so popular. It isn't new, it's been around as long as fanfiction has. What baffles me, is why the authors of slash and yaoi (male/male pairings), tend to be young woman. Another thing that baffles me is a lot of people use 'Love is love' as a defense, saying that love knows no gender. I perfectly agree. But a majority of these fanfictions are not about love. They're about sex. They're about simple physical attraction and sexual companionship. And, the most baffling part of all... they pair tend to pair canon characters with male characters they 1) don't get along with in the respective media or 2) are best of friends.

For example. Duo and Heero of Gundam Wing. A majority of people consider them an almost canon couple. I've seen every episode and the Endless Waltz, and I do not see it at all. Heero was far too obsessed with Relena, and Duo had a 'relationship' with Hilde. I don't see them suddenly admiting their attraction to each other and hopping into Heero's Gundam to screw. I just don't see it. I've looked at webpage to see the 'evidence' and most of it is relying on photos of Duo hanging on Heero. Does this mean every touchy-feely guy has to automatically want to sleep with whoever he is hanging on?

I also don't understand why people enjoy this. Why young women especially would prefer to read about two guys lusting after each other. I've heard many arguements that say it's taboo and unique. It's taboo in the offline world maybe, but it's far more popular in some online fandoms than straight couples. (Highlander is a wonderful example. I dare you to look for fic from Highlander. I bet you'll find ten pairings of Methos and MacLeod before you find 2 straight pairings.)

Perhaps it has something to do with being unable to write or wish to picture your favorite characters loving a woman. Perhaps it's easier to get into the mindset of loving a man, so you can write about loving two male characters at the same time, without having to have a Mary Sue who's a slut.

I don't know. It baffles me. I'm just going to go back to digging up lovely /het/ fanfic, and maybe look for some Raphael/Mikael stories. *.* (They were a couple in the series, and I have no problem with pre-ordained gay couples.)

(Another Hindi phrase!)

ascarya-vat pasyati kascid enam
ascarya-vad vadati tathaiva canyah
ascarya-vac cainam anyah srnoti
srutvapy enam veda na caiva kascit

(Translation: Some look on the soul as amazing, some describe him as amazing, some hear of him as amazing, while others, even after hearing about him, cannot understand him at all.)
